Top 10 Most Frequent OSHA Citations

The top 10 OSHA citations list for 2015 has been announced. Patrick Kapust, OSHA’s Deputy Director of its Directorate of Enforcement Programs, presented the Top 10 OSHA citations list on the Expo floor, during the 2015 NSC Congress & Expo in September.

This is a comprehensive list of the most frequently cited OSHA workplace safety violations for the 2015 fiscal year, so check to see if your company is compliant!

  1. Fall Protection (1926.501) – 7,402

  2. Hazard Communication (1910.1200) – 5,681

  3. Scaffolding (1926.451) – 4,681

  4. Respiratory Protection (1910.134) – 3,626

  5. Lockout/Tagout (1910.147) – 3,308

  6. Powered Industrial Trucks (1910.178) – 3,004

  7. Ladders (1926.1053) – 2,732

  8. Electrical – Wiring Methods (1910.305) – 2,624

  9. Machine Guarding (1910.212) – 2,540

  10. Electrical – General Requirements (1910.303) – 2,181

The fact that improper Fall Protection was the top OSHA citation isn’t a big surprise, since the regulations for guardrails and hoist areas can be tricky. Even so, incidents from an elevated area on the premises can be catastrophic, and employers need to be wary of that.

Ladder-related issues came in as the 7th most cited OSHA violation. This was surprising, since ladders are generally considered to be one of the most dangerous pieces of equipment. But perhaps its low placement on the list is a good thing; a sign that employers recognize the hazard of improper ladder care, and they are taking action to prevent this!
